FIFTH GRADE SUMMER READING 2013
5th graders are required to read two books for summer reading. One must be Ruby Holler and then choose one from the list below. If you have read Ruby Holler then pick two from the list below.


Book Required of All Students:

Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech NOTE: Choose another book from the list below if you have already read Ruby Holler.
SUMMARY: Thirteen-year-old fraternal twins Dallas and Florida have grown up in a terrible orphanage but their lives change forever when an eccentric but sweet older couple invites them each on an adventure, beginning in an almost magical place called Ruby Holler.

My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
SUMMARY: A young boy relates his adventures during the year he spends living alone in the Catskill Mountains, including his struggle for survival, his dependence on nature, his animal friends, and his ultimate realization that he needs human companionship.

SUMMARY: Records the courage and self-reliance of an Indian girl who lived alone for eighteen years on an isolated island off the California coast when her tribe emigrated and she was left behind.

In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson by Bette Bao Lord
SUMMARY: In 1947, a Chinese child comes to Brooklyn where she becomes Americanized at school, in her apartment building, and by her love for baseball.

5th Grade Summer Reading 2013
ASSIGNMENT
Goal: As you are reading one of the summer reading books, I want to encourage you to explore issues in that book that are important to you.
Task: Create a reader’s journal for one of the two books required for summer reading.
  • Choose any 5 of the following questions (on the following page).
  • Take the time to think about and plan your journal responses before you write.
  • Each question you choose should be copied and placed at the top of a new page.
  • Answers should vary in length and be written in complete sentences (most responses will require 3-5 sentences)
  • You may either type or write (neatly!) your responses. If you write them, write them in a journal-type notebook, or place them in a notebook binder of some sort.
  • Feel free to decorate your journal / notebook so it reflects both your personality and the book you read.
  • If you type your journal, then secure the pages with a staple or paper clip and place it in a folder.
  • In either case, clearly label it with your name and the title of the book.
Due: Your Reader's Response Journal is due on August 20, 2013, so if you have questions, they can be addressed at the start of the year.

Reader’s Journal Questions
1. What were your feelings after reading the opening chapter(s) of the book? After reading the first half of the book? After finishing the book?
2. Did this book make you laugh? Cry? Cringe? Smile? Describe and explain your reaction.
3. What are the best parts of the book, and why? What are the worst parts, and why?
4. Which parts of the book seem most believable, and why? Which parts of the book seem most unbelievable, and why?
5. What do you feel is the most important word in the book? The most important passage or section? The most important element (an event, character, feeling, place, decision)? Why? Explain.
6. In what way(s) are you like any of the characters? Explain.
7. Do any characters in the book remind you of friends, family members, or classmates? Explain.
8. Which character in the book would you like to be, and why? Which personality traits of this character would you like to acquire, and why?
9. What makes you wonder in this book, and why? What confuses you in the book, and why?
10. What surprises came to you in this book, and why?
